Solid wood is becoming more expensive as it get more scarce, due to logging and the amount of time needed for growing trees. There are many different woods with various price, characteristics and strength.
Solid wood came in 2 flavours, “hardwood” and “softwood”. The two categories can be defined by their differences in the micro structure, which determines its density and strength as defined in “Janka hardness test” as described in wikipedia.

Hand plane Stanley Number 4 Restoration.
A couple days ago I bought a Stanley No 4 hand plane on ebay,
On woodworking, tools usually cost Time-Money-Frustration. If you buy a High end Veritas, Lie-Nielsen will cost you almost no Time and Frustration but you end up spend Money.
